An apology...and then my kid almost made me piss myself!
(I have a good excuse for not posting last night. Mac had a sleep study and was given a sleeping pill for, with instructions to be driven to and picked up from the hospital. It was nearly an hour drive one-way and Nixon and I got home at nearly 9:30pm and needed to leave by 5am this morning. I didn't do the post because I needed to sleep.)
* Nixon and I woke up around 4:45am today, in order to leave and pick up Mac by 6am. Nixon was really good about getting up, dressed and in the car. He was even good when we got home and needed a nap (seriously...I was exhausted!). Nixon was so tired by 1pm, he was incredibly hyper. I finally had to force him to nap because I thought he was going to hurt himself! and I was going nuts listening to his hyper jabbering about total nonsense <- bad mom confession
* This evening, while making dinner, Nixon mastered the silent sneak up behind someone and yell "BOO!". It would've been a super awesome, proud mom moment...except he did it to me and I was in the middle of draining hot pasta in the sink and he was right behind me and nearly got elbowed in the face!
Good job and the scare, bad timing.
* Finally....Nixon finally cleaned his room. By himself. While I supervised. When he was done I explained it's important for him to keep his room clean because for his birthday we're getting him a fish and his fish will need a nice, clean room to live in.
He is super excited about his birthday gift! Nixon said "I can do it, because I'm a big, growing boy, Momma! Growing boys keep their rooms clean, like me!"

This time the latest national tragedy hits close to home, while everyone I know is safe, the stress is frightening. My heart is with the DC Navy Yard tonight.
* Nixon had a great day at school! He gave his teacher a hug before he left and she said today was his best day yet! There were 3 happy people leaving that class today (Mac, Nixon and myself), which was awesome!
* The rest of the day was spent with the shootings that took place at the Navy Yard in DC weighing on our minds. Just after 3pm, Mac got called to report to work and go to DC to be part of a team being sent as additional support on the team. Nixon started to act out because he could sense the tension that both Mac and I suddenly had oozing from us. It was unintentional but it was a reaction to the unknown circumstances of the situation Mac was getting ready to go face.
* He called at 10pm, very briefly, he's safe and was taking a chow break. I'm going to bed and not taking photos tonight because I want Nixon to have a solid, uninterrupted night of sleep.

In the middle of the night there was a thump and a cry, the next morning he says "use your mommy voice"....he is very lucky he is so darned cute!
he woke up and rolled over just as the flash on my camera went off...I'm keeping this one! |
* Who got woken up, out of a dead sleep, by a *thump* and crying child?!? This mom! Nixon finally did what Mac was always afraid he'd do: he rolled out off our bed. Our bed, which is about 3 feet from the ground. He rolled over in his sleep, after he FLEW at me in his sleep and elbowed me in the back of my head and between my shoulder blades I swear to gods he like super-flied across the bed and landed on top of me, just as I was falling asleep!, he quickly fell back to sleep and so did I. Then he rolled over and *thump* cue my panicked scramble out of bed to get him and his crying!
I lifted him back into the bed and just held him while looking for blood on his face or head. He had no blood on him, but kept asking him if he was okay. He told me his face was okay but his back and legs hurt, because he landed on them. After he calmed down, by the way while he was calming down we were curled up in the center of my giant-ass bed so he didn't worry about falling off again, I asked him if he thought it was time to stop sleeping in mom & dad's bed. He said "Yeah, because falling out of it is a long fall and the ground hurt my back Mommy.", I carried him into his bedroom, gave him hugs and kisses and he was soon fast asleep.
He does have a couple small bruises on his spine from the fall last night. Totally one of the top 10 scariest middle of the night moments I've had with him!
* Nixon is hilarious! I am grumpy-as-hell first thing in the morning. Nixon, my son, knows this. So when he says something to me, before I've had my coffee, that makes me do a double take, I just love him a little more.
I was making Nixon waffles. I called him to the kitchen, barely speaking because I hate being awake before I've had my coffee, "Nixon, come get your waffles". Nixon walks into the kitchen and says "No, mommy, you don't say that. Not like that."
I look at him, "Say what?"
He says, straight-faced "You say it in your mommy voice. Not that voice you just said."
All I could respond was "My "mommy voice"? What's that?"
He was kind enough to explain, "Your mommy voice is your happy voice."
Ah, it all made sense, I wasn't happy enough for him. But, please note, he's not a fan of my overly sarcastic happy tone either. With him it's either real or nothing at all.
he knew I was taking his picture, so he asked me to hide him from the light. |

I asked Nixon to help me with today's post....
Today was pretty awesome, so I figured I'd get the highlights in Nixon's own words:
* Nixon: Oh...my undies are smelling stinky (as he starts looking down his undies)
me: Nixon, your undies are fine.
Nixon: No, they are stinky...I farted in them.
* me: What was the best part about today?
Nix: What is it?
me: I'm asking you...what was the best thing you did today?
Nixon: Yes, mom?
me: What was the favorite thing you did today?
Nixon: Bowling and have fun playing with Aunt Franny.
* me: Was bowling awesome?
Nix: Yeah! I was bowling with orange bowling ball and knocking down the bowling pins!
me: Where you a good bowler?
Nix: Yeah!
*me: Did anything else awesome happen today?
Nix: Yeah?
me: What else?
Nixon: Bowling!
me: You already said that. What else?
Nixon: I saw Aunt Franny.
me: Did you do anything with daddy?
Nixon: I said that! Daddy was here and I said that, now he is gone and I will never say that again! (Daddy is in bed sleeping, for the record)
me: What did you and Daddy do?
Nixon: More bowling and knocking down the bowling pins.
me: So today was just about bowling?
Nixon: Yeah! I'm not going to go to bed mom. Can I not go to bed?
me: I don't see that as a possibility. It's almost bedtime.
* The scary part of the night:
Franny, being the awesomely and fun aunt she is, came over to give Nixon a hug and kind of caught him by surprise with food in his mouth. He had a piece of tortilla chip get caught in his throat and started coughing, turning pink and getting flushed with tears coming out of his eye. I'm holding a napkin at his mouth in case he coughs it up, Mac is patting his back, Franny picks him up and tosses him upside-down to try to dislodge it first thing, and I start getting him to sip ice water.
About 5 terrifying minutes later, he stops coughing and just wants to cuddle....on Daddy! Surprise, surprise. He was very content to snuggle up on Mac's lap and be held by daddy while everything went back to normal. He finished his game and we all lived happily ever after while he learned the reason we are always telling him not to run/goof-off with food in his mouth.
Even though tonight was not his fault.
